General Rules
Entry is only available to paid members who have registered to play for the Club Championship
Games on Saturdays will start at 10:15am - at this time clocks will be started even if players are absent from the board. After 30 minutes have elapsed, absent players will be ruled to have forfeited.
Games on Tuesdays are to start by agreement between the players
Games are 40 minutes with 5 sec Fischer increment (5 secs added after each move) - this is to fit a game into approximately a 90 minute window
If both players agree, clocks are not required
Notation of games is mandatory - except against Eddy when it is optional
Mobile phones must be left visible on the table whenever a player decides to leave the board
After games are completed, a Score Sheet must be completed and signed by both players - missing or incomplete forms mean the game result cannot be counted
Tournament Schedule
The dates for each tournament are shown on the Tournament page and the Calendar page. It is the responsability of each player to be aware of the tournament schedule.
Results from the Ladder Competition to not count towards Club Champion points.
Scoring
Scoring each game will be as follows
win = 1 point Loss = 0 points Draw = 0.5 points
Each player's score from each tournament will be summed, and the player with the highest total will be deemed Club Champion.
For Swiss #1, Swiss #2 and Swiss #3 tournaments, tiebreaks in the following order will be applied - Buchholz Cut-1, Buchholz, Progressive.
Tiebreak scores do not apply to the overall Championship Points. At the conclusion on Swiss #3, if there is a tie in the overall Championship Points table, play-off games will be played to determine clear winners - exact format TBC.
Byes
Players are able to request a half point bye once per competition. Requests must be in email to adamhinchey@gmail.com. Requests for a bye must be submitted before the deadlines outlined below:
Bye Round Request deadline
1 Midnight on Friday immediately before round 1
2 Midnight on Friday immediately before round 1
3 Midnight on Friday immediately before round 2
4 Midnight on Friday immediately before round 3
etc
Requests received after the deadlines will be treated as a 0 point bye.
If there is an uneven number of players as a result of the requested bye, the lowest ranked player will have a forced bye and score 1 point for the bye.
Forfeits
If a player does not attend or play on a Saturday where their game is scheduled, they will forfeit the game (unless a bye is requested as per above). If their opponent was present, their opponent will receive 1 point. If neither player is present, both players will score 0 unless prior agreement.
Please avoid forfeits by requesting a bye.
If a player forfeits a second time in the one tournament, the second forfeit will result in the player being disqualified for the remainder of the tournament. A last round forfeit in Swiss #1 or Swiss #2 that is the second forfeit will result in a forced 0 point bye in the next tournament. Any last round forfeit in Swiss #3 will result in disqualification from the Championship standings.
It is possible for a player who missed a Saturday tournament game to "catch up" the game on the Tuesday immediately following a Saturday tournament round. However, their opponent does not have to agree to the game on a Tuesday, nor does the opponent need to be present to avoid forfeit themselves.
By mutual agreement and communication to the Tournament Director, a Saturday scheduled game can be rescheduled to the Tuesday immediately following the Saturday, however there is no second chance for forfeits in this case.
Fair Play
It is expected that competitors will not engage in any activity to give themselves or someone else assistance of any kind during tournament games. Ettalong Chess Club tournaments will be guided by the New South Wales Chess Association Code of Ethics available here. The Ettalong Chess Club Committee may choose to implement all, some, none or any part of the Code of Ethics as they deem appropriate.
Disputes
Any disputes need to be raised with the arbitor on the day and/or the Tournament Director as soon as practically possible.
